Oceanography

Dr Tammy Morris, Ocean and Polar Coordinator at the South African Polar Research Infrastructure (SAPRI) and the South African Environmental Observation Network (NRF-SAEON)
I am a physical oceanographer specialising in in situ ocean observations. As such, I have a keen interest in the technologies used to measure the ocean. My PhD focused on mesoscale eddies in the source water regions of the Agulhas Current and how these influence the Agulhas Current in terms of transport of water, heat and salt.
My primary focus of research now extends to boundary currents, particularly western boundary currents such as the Agulhas Current, and how these dynamic systems impact coastal regions and ultimately society.
I studied at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) for my undergraduate, BTech and Masters degrees, and completed my PhD at THE University of Cape Town (UCT). As such I have experience working in the field of ocean observing technologies and applying these to the research I currently do in the Agulhas Current.
I enjoy working with innovative technologies and doing educational outreach around ocean observing instruments as a way of encouraging the next generation of marine scientists.
