Jethan d’Hotman, Senior Technician at the South African Polar Research Infrastructure (SAPRI)

Jethan is a senior technician and physical oceanographer with extensive at-sea experience on small boats and large research vessels. Skilled in piloting buoyancy gliders within the Agulhas Current, he has contributed to major projects, including the development of a real-time oceanographic coastal mooring network, the Agulhas System Climate Array, and an ACEP project investigating coastal and shelf interactions in Algoa Bay.

Collaborating with leading institutions, Jethan has supported research efforts along the Agulhas Current through both technical and analytical expertise, leveraging Python to process complex data and generate actionable insights.

Jethan’s research focus includes Physical Oceanography of the Agulhas Current and its impacts on coastal dynamics. With a strong foundation in fieldwork and data management, Jethan is passionate about advancing sustainable ocean science through innovation and collaboration.

He serves as the Co-Chair for the Ocean Best Practices Task Team for Coastal Observations for under-resourced countries and is a Co-PI for the Ocean Decade-endorsed project Coastal Lab in a Box (COLaB), working alongside scientists, technicians, engineers, and local communities to make ocean science more accessible.
